1423 S.B.S. Mauritius 2008-2018 10 YO Rum – Review
Like those tiny Caribbean islands you might occasionally fly over, the Maria Loca cocktail bar in Paris is so miniscule that if you were to sneeze and blink you’d go straight past it, which is what happens to us, twice. When Mrs. Caner and I finally locate it and go inside, it’s dark, it’s hectic, ......

St. Aubin “Mauritius” Cuvée Grande Reserve 2004 Rhum – Review
#483 The History Collection 1715 “Isle de France” Cuvée Spéciale, in spite of being made from cane juice, reminded me rather more of an El Dorado rum than a true agricole, and with the History Collection’s 1814 “Mauritius” Cuvée Grande Reserve we’re looking at today, similar thoughts occurred to me…albeit about a different country. Perhaps ......

Mauritius Club Rum 2014 (Sherry Finish) – Review
Too young, too dressed up, when it didn’t need to be #321 The Mauritius Club Rum 2014 (Sherry Finish) is an interesting essay in the craft, and for my money, slightly better than the Gold of Mauritius Dark rum I looked before. The sherry finishing makes its own statement and adds that extra fillip of ......

Tilambic 151 Overproof Mauritius Rum – Review
Ten years ago, the 151s were regarded with the sort of wry caution with which one approaches a crazy old uncle who may lash out with either invective or drool at any moment, depending on the circumstances.  They encouraged adverbial density, were the strongest rums available to the rumworld, and used exclusively as cocktail bases ......

Gold of Mauritius Dark Rum – Review
Good with dessert. #320 You’d think that with the various encomiums the rum has gotten that it’s some kind of diamond in the rough, an undiscovered masterpiece of the blender’s art. “Incredibly rich…mouth watering…a cracker,” enthused Drinks Enthusiast; and the comments of Master of Malt (which one should take with a pinch of salt), are ......

Penny Blue XO Single Estate Mauritian Rum (4th Batch)
Mauritian Rum is a new one on me.  I have in the past tried Pink Pigeon Spiced Rum.  Penny Blue hails from the same distillery as Pink Pigeon – The Medine Distillery.  However, Penny Blue promises an altogether more sophisticated and grown up experience.Regulars readers of the blog may be familiar with the press release I placed on the site a couple of weeks back.  By way of thanks for promoting this venture (which is done in conjunction with the wonderfull Berry Bros and Rudd) I was sent a sample of the 4th batch of this Single Estate Mauritian Rum....
Penny Blue Single Cask Mauritian Rum (Cask #28)
Penny Blue Mauritian Rum hails from the Medine Distillery in Mauritius.  The rum is brought to the UK under the watchful eye of Berry Bros. & Rudd, on of London’s premium importers of wines and spirits. In the past there have been 4 editions of the Penny Blue.  This edition is the first Single Cask rum to be released in the UK....
That Boutique-y Rum Company Labourdonnais Distillery Mauritius
That Boutique-y Rum Company Labourdonnais Distiilery Mauritius. Here we have a 5 year old from the wonderfully named Labourdonnais Distillery on the island of Mauritius. Pronounced Labour-don-nais, so I am told. I can’t actually find a translation  for what it might mean, so we’ll move on from this lesson in French and talk rum again....
S.B.S – The 1423 Single Barrel Selection Mauritius 2008
S.B.S. – The 1423 Single Barrel Selection Mauritius 2008. 1423 have been releasing a varied selection of single cask rums over the past couple of years. They haven’t stuck rigidly to the likes of Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados. We have featured a few rums from Mauritius over the past few years. Most of those have been from the Medine Distillery. This particular bottling, is however from another distillery on the island....
Clément ‘Colonne Créole’
Clément ‘Colonne Créole’ (49.5%, OB, Martinique, agricole, +/-2016) This one came in a flat decanter. The colonne créole is the traditional still that they use for rhum agricole in Martinique and Guadeloupe. So, nothing really fancy or unusual here, but there. Colour: white. Nose: it’s rather earthy and nutty, and rather light. Notes of roots but not much else. Beetroots? (which would take the biscuit, historically!) With ...
Mauritius Club 2014
Mauritius Club 2014 (40%, OB, Mauritius, 2015) There is some French heritage in Mauritius/Maurice. This new and probably young rum matured in South-African casks. Colour: full gold. Nose: there’s more maraschino and marzipan than in maraschino and marzipan. That means that must have been some kind of flavouring going on, but I have to say it worked. It’s just not ‘pure’ rum, but this nose is very pleasant. Remember Cherry Heering? Mouth: very sweet and s...
Blue Mauritius 'Gold'
Blue Mauritius 'Gold' (40%, OB, blend, +/-2013) Love this on the brand’s website: ‘Why travel to Mauritius when Mauritius can come to you. How to drink? Replace the cognac, over pass the whisky and most importantly, like no other rums, can be enjoyed straight with no ice!’ Sounds… err… Colour: orange amber. Nose: wood varnish and pineapple sweets at first nosing, then quite a lot of coconut. Smells a bit like some old-style suntan lotion – and holidays. Actually, there...
The Pink Pigeon Single Estate Mauritian Vanilla Spiced Rum
The Pink Pigeon Single Estate Mauritian Vanilla Spiced Rum. That’s quite a mouthful so for the purposes of this review we will review to it as I see it noted in bars etc as just Pink Pigeon or The Pink Pigeon.Pink Pigeon hails form the Medine Distillery, Mauritius. The Medine Distillery has been gaining a very solid reputation for its Penny Blue range of Single Estate “Pure” rums. They are very proud of being a Single Estate Produce and they are equally clear on the fact they do not permit the use of additives in any of their rums....
Gold of Mauritius
Gold of Mauritius (40%, OB, Mauritius, +/-2015) Made by the same company as Mauritius Gold, this rum is aged in Port casks from South-Africa. So rather Port-like. Colour: amber. Nose: starts with some caramel and toasted bread, goes on with vanilla and pipe tobacco plus a slightly earthy tea, and keeps developing on roasted cashews – which is unusual indeed. Rather toasty, this seems to work. Mouth: really sweet, liqueury, and nutty. ...
Gold of Mauritius – Dark Rum
Gold of Mauritius quite a grandiose title and one which certainly sets this rum up as one that really needs to impress!  Mauritian rum has come to our attention before we have reviewed two Penny Blue expressions from the Medine Distillery.Gold of Mauritus offers a slightly different take on rum – but lets not say too much at this point....
Gold of Mauritius
Readers and Subscribers will be more than aware that I have covered a few Rums from Mauritius previously, but this one is a little ‘different’ to say the least. A chance meeting with Darius Burrows of Trilogy Beverage Brands gave me my first opportunity to taste Gold of Mauritius. Then whilst visiting the Boutique RumFest, ...
